Selfie Ethos Analysis - Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Discussion
Ethos is the act of a character convincing an audience to believe in what they want them to. This is not an easy task since the society tends to believe in individuals that they respect. One of the central aims of ethos is to create the impression that one is worth listening to. The illustration of ethos is very common on social media sites such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Famous and ordinary personalities take photos or post texts with the intention to convey particular messages that they want the viewers to grasp. For this reason, they command noteworthy social media influence; both fans and haters alike. A case in point is when one posts a Facebook profile picture; this solitary image is the first thing people view when they are searching for information pertaining to an individual. For this reason, people spend a great deal of time getting the perfect image that mirrors their values and brings out their personality. This paper presents an ethos analysis of a famous boxer by the name Floyd Mayweather.

Facebook Profile

Mayweather shares a diverse set of values that are well documented in his profile pictures. These values mirror a society in which people encourage or discourage certain behaviors. Through the above image, Mayweather attempts to convince the viewer of his credibility and character. The image indicates Mayweather surrounded by large bundles of money, which are laid out strategically for this photo. While this may seem like a clear portrayal of wealth, it also depicts a strong sense of pride or arrogance. Another noteworthy fact is that Mayweather is alone, engrossed into his phone, and does not bother to look in the camera's direction. This brings out a sense of self-interest since he is engaged in his business. What is more, the picture insinuates the feeling of isolation and lack of friendliness. One may also deduce that it portrays lack of motivation since he is a very active boxer, who has worked so hard to achieve the money that he has. However, Mayweather gives the impression that it is easy for one to be rich. To be precise, almost all the messages that this profile picture passes on to the audience go against the societal norms. The boxer stands out among his colleagues; he stamps on this assertion through the rare choice of values that he exposes on his Facebook profile.
The profile picture is mostly applicable to individuals who exemplify values that go against the societal norms. Today, it is becoming quite common for people to portray themselves defiantly particularly on social media. Although the boxer is not a teenager, he depicts many concepts that most youths desire; wealth, fame and a sense of freedom and carelessness. This profile picture portrays values that do not blend well with those that the society is attempting to teach (the youth). While this may seem like a harmless gesture, images that individuals portray on social media have a serious influence on their reputation and society in general. Without a doubt, Mayweather's profile picture creates a misleading and destructive notion in the minds of the youth and they may engage in any activities that attract handsome pays. When they see such images constantly, they develop impractical notions of how the society functions. The image may also influence them to value intangible things more than they do ethics.

This Instagram post by Mayweather shows him posing in front of a parked fleet of supercars worth five million dollars that are in front of his private jet. He uses this text as an ethos of persuasion. This text depicts wealth, fame, and the dramatic effect that the text can have on young people. Such a picture may cause the youth to develop a relentless desire for wealth and fame. Additionally, it has the potential to create a culture in which the youth develop abnormal perceptions about their self-image and portray negative tendencies since they are star-struck.

Effects of a Black and White Picture

The black and white photo does not have any distractions; instead, the prime focus is on the subject. Taking color out of the picture allows the image to speak for itself. Unlike the rest, it appears honest and enables Mayweather to show his true self. He doesn’t hide behind colorful shades of international currency or the bling on his body. The picture portrays Mayweather in his natural habitat and shows that, all in all, he is a boxer. Additionally, the black and white image exudes the subtlety of tones; the viewer can also see numerous shades in between.
Without a doubt, the black and white photo creates a scene of drama using tonal contrast. What is more, the light tones in the boxing ring create an impressive image. The image draws attention to the flowing lines and shadows that portray form. The lighting also makes it appear three-dimensional, and the lighting from the side reveals form as it casts shadows.
In summary, Mayweather is a prime example of a person who uses ethos with great versatility. He was able to establish an enormous fan-base all around the world using social media as a means of doing so. Whether he is liked or not, he is definitely talked about. Mayweather certainly does want to be seen that way, but the majority of his posts portray him as an ignorant, self-centered and a very shallow person. This can result in creating a destructive notion in the minds of the youth which might primely focus on becoming rich rather than wealth being a byproduct of an activity that is driven by something bigger. For example, transforming the world prime source of energy. Being arguably the most talked about athlete in the world, Mayweather has lots fans and aspiring athletes looking up to him. He is certainly the most successful boxer of all time. Which gives lots of weight to his persona both in and out of the boxing ring. In my opinion he uses that power in a very poor manner. Instead of showing people how emotionally fulfilling to achieve such athletic heights, the prime purpose that his social media account serves is to show off his incredible wealth. It’s almost sad to see how a man that can actually make a positive difference on a large scale, wastes such opportunity. Mayweather will definitely be the greatest of all time in the boxing world, but in the real world, he will soon be forgotten.

Gun-fire-cloth
                                                                                        Rules
Two people stand back to back  to each other with hands in front of them. Together they say “gun-fire-cloth”. As soon as they say the last word, they must turn around to face their opponent and bring one hand forward to represent either a gun, fire or cloth.

  1. Gun

2. Fire

3. Cloth

Decide who the winner is based on the signs. Gun beats cloth (makes a whole in it), cloth beats fire (puts it out) and fire beats gun (melts it).
